Take some time out in the "you space" for YOU...

External Supervision

Like a lone Moai on Easter Island, some workplaces offer External Supervision where you can take some time and space to stop, reflect, learn, and play.

The Objective
The objective of External Supervision is to work one-on-one, or as a group, with team members in a safe learning and growth environment where the focus is on team members' professional and personal development.  Regular meetings and learning models and tools will provide a pathway for staff to explore challenges they face in their work, reflect on their practice, and gain awareness and skills to help move themselves forward in a way that serves them well.

Outcomes
For the Team Member
Overall outcomes for the team member will be set by them in each of their sessions – the outcomes will be specific to them and determined by them

For the Organisation
The organisation will have the opportunity to provide staff with a safe, independent learning and reflection space to unpack challenges and build and strengthen inner resources and skills, professionally and personally, whilst also holding a space for proactive and healthy self-care to help mitigate burnout and vicarious trauma

How
Supervision can be done on-line, over the phone, or face-to-face on-site (to be discussed with the organisation).  I offer both individual and group Supervision, on a regular Supervision Program format, or for ad hoc or incident/crisi Supervision.

For individual External Supervision I like to include a short intro session first, then regular sessions as required:
  1. Getting To Know You - a quick 10 min meet & greet over the phone or on-line
  2. 1 hour Supervision Sessions, as required, usually monthly or quarterly -  In Session 1 we go over the Supervision Contract I use, then identify any specific outcomes the client may want to work on overall, plus an exploration of how they would like their Supervision to be for them.  The ongoing sessions offer the space for exploring, reflecting, and workshopping current issues for the team member to gain awareness and build skills and techniques to manage themselves in a way they identify would serve them well in their role and client practice
  3. Regular feedback - every 3-4 sessions we check in to ensure Supervision is on-track, appropriate, relevant. practical, and effective for the team member
  4. Feedback Loop for the organisation - frequency and content of check-ins between me and organisation will be determined by the organisation, ensuring that confidentiality and the safe space of the "you space" is maintained while meeting organisational, legal, and ethical boundaries

I've been providing External Supervision now for eight years - group and individual - and I really love the space, and the focus on self awareness and empowerment.  Having the space and time at work to reflect, unpack, learn, and work with issues is a really great way to support real and practical self-care for your team, which of course helps mitigate the real current day challenges of burnout and vicarious trauma.  To chat about External Supervision and how it might work within your organisation just shoot through an email and we'll get the ball rolling.
