Happiness Learning
What an exciting addition to the workplace scene - learning in Happiness.
Happiness workshops and learning has come about from the popularity of the new field of Positive Psychology. Finally, documented evidence is emerging on the benefits to health and wealth by simply being happy.
The two workshops below were originally designed for a client in the Financial Services sector, for the their support staff, and for the first time ever, lunchtime learning sessions were over-subscribed! In fact, some of the Financial Advisers got wind of the sessions and asked for workshops specificially for them!
It seems that most people, no matter what their role within an organisation, like to learn about being happier.
We can offer your team anywhere from a 45 minute session through to a luxurious 3 hour workshop, depending on your time constraints. These sessions are great for a Professional Development day, Conference, lunch learning, or as part of a Wellbeing program, or workshop option as a staff incentive or team building activity. These sessions are also very powerful as a component of a Change Management process - allowing discussion and a sense of empowerment over personal happiness levels.

Mmmmm...eating this yum Strawberry & Rhubarb Pie from a pie shop in Napa, USA, could be a mood boosting activity...just one of the areas we cover in The Happiness Pie workshop!

"The Happiness Pie" workshop45 min - 3 hour workshop
What makes you happy? Would a new job, or a new car, a better house or more polite kids make you happier?? The Happiness Pie workshop is based on the work done by Dr Sonja Lyubomirsky, documented in her book The How of Happiness. Dr Lyubomirsky suggests that we have an enormous amount of power over our own happiness, and funnily enough, it doesn't have a lot to do with our personal circumstances. Her twenty years of research has come up with some interesting findings, and this is what we explore in this workshop. Dr Lybumirsky refers to the "Happiness Pie", which is made up of our own natural "set point" for happiness, our personal circumstances, and then a huge chunk of leftover pie that we have control over. It is this "leftover" pie where we can focus our energy and develop our own strategies to increase our personal happiness levels. So, this is what we do in The Happiness Pie - have a look at her models and findings, and then work on some personal strategies to improve our own peronsal happiness levels. Of course a few other people's work gets thrown into the works - a bit of Covey, and sometimes some Czikszentmihalyi (Finding Flow). It's a fun, informative and empowering workshop where team members will leave with their own Happiness Pie Map to put their learning into action. |

This is a Conch Burger, bought and eaten on a very small island in the Bahamas - Conchs are those little critters that live inside the big conch shell found in the area. This burger is battered and deep fried - it's not terribly good for you, and in fact, it tasted pretty ordinary. This would be an example of Shahar's Worst Burger - tastes bad (no current pleasure), and is bad for you (no future benefit or meaning). This is just one of the burgers you'll meet in this workshop!

"The Happiness Burger" workshop45 min - 3 hour workshop
This more advanced workshop is based on the work by Dr Tal Ben-Shahar who wrote Happier and The Pursuit of Perfect and was one of the founding lecturers of Positive Psychology at Harvard. The workshop focuses on Shahar's discussion of Happiness being a balance of pleasure and meaning, and uses four different types of hamburgers as metaphors for the basic ways this manifests in people. We look at each of the hamburgers, and discuss the pros and cons of each, with time for self reflection and application. The focus is on exploring how we balance pleasure and meaning in our own lives, and how we can get more in both our personal and work life. Again, some work from other Positive Psychologists is thrown in, and if time permits we delve a little into Czikszentmihalyi's concept of Flow - that sweet spot where we achieve peak performance and experience in our lives. This is another fun, thought provoking and empowering workshop where team members will leave with their own Happiness Hamburger Map to put their learning into action. |
