Come and have an adventure...a learning adventure!

Let me take you on the ultimate adventure...no, not salmon fishing in Alaska, but the ultimate adventure...LEARNING.

Serena Bailey

Serena Bailey and The You Space

The You Space is a learning space that allows you to explore, discover and learn what you want to.  Whether it's a corporate training session, or one of the wonderful YOU Workshops, The You Space is all about you finding what it is you may or may not know you're seeking to learn.

My 25 years experience as a Trainer and Facilitator has shown me that in every training session, every person in the room has their own personal learning adventure and learns something different - they learn what's important to them, they take the learning on board, reflect and personalise it, and start to play with how they can use it in their everyday life - be it work or home life (and usually in both).

The You Space is a way to combine both my professional learning services, and personal development workshops.  Usually, in the corporate world, the two don't mix too well, however, I've learnt that the most powerful learning that takes place in my professional training sessions is usually the self development models - they always appear in "The Top 3 Things I Learnt Today"  section of the feedback forms.  I believe most of us want to learn more about ourselves and use that learning to move ourselves forward - it's personal evolution.

A bit of history....

Armed with a Communications Degree, I dabbled a little in corporate Marketing and Communications, where I quickly discovered that training was the funnest job you could ever have!!  Time to retrain.

I headed to David Jones with my newly acquired Train the Trainer certificate for my first training gig - handling all training needs for the 500 staff at Bondi Junction including Induction, customer service, sales, management development and process training.  This laid the foundation for moving into my consulting business (and so I could be step-mother to my 4 new kids), Serena Training & Development.

Now, twenty-five years later, The You Space is a boutique business servicing just a few quality clients at any one time, designing, developing and delivering training programs, coaching in-house trainers, and consulting on in-house learning and development projects.

And now, as an NLP Neuro Semantics Master Practitioner with training in Integral Coaching and Meta Coaching, I offer Coaching programs and services for both the workplace and private clients.  As a believer in continual learning, I'm currently doing a Masters in Counselling & Applied Psychotherapy to bring greater depth to my work with clients.

I've worked with a range of fantastic companies across a spectrum of industries from retail, through to technology, financial services, and not-for-profit.  My client list includes Chickadee Chicken, OfficeWorks, Unwired Australia, Johnson & Johnson Pacific, Energy Australia (Ausgrid), Centric Wealth, Vision Home Loans, Ability Options and The Australian Red Cross.

The You Space, now not only specialises in soft skills training, such as communication and assertiveness training, boundary setting, and the new area of wellbeing and happiness, I work hand-in-hand with the client to develop and/or deliver or facilitate all manner of learning and development needs.

Philosophy

Learn. Reflect. Play. (in any order!)

It's a simple triumvirate that represents The You Space's learning philosophy.  Learn. Reflect. Play.  They work together, in any order, it's a successful recipe for growth and change:

Learn

This step is about taking on new learnings - whether they be models, concepts, ideas, techniques, skills or thoughts.  Learning can happen in a structured way, such as workshops or training sessions, or in a less structured way such as reading a book or watching a show.  It's all good, it's all learning!

Reflect

This is the step where you internalise and ponder - you take that step back, analyse and process, and make decisions on what to do or where to go next.  It can be a short period of reflection, as little as a few seconds, or longer - days or months!!!  Remember, it's all about you, so you reflect at your own pace.

Play

This is the testing it all out phase!  It's where you get to take the learning and/or reflection and go have have some fun with it in the real world - does the new learning work?  What works?  What doesn't?  If you tweak it will it work better for you??  As you can see there's a bit of jumping from Play to Reflect and back again - that's why it's so much fun!

So, the triangle of Learn. Play. Reflect. is where it's at with learning here at The You Space.  In some of the workshops or training sessions, you'll be encouraged to use all three parts of the triangle - over and over, and other times you'll be encouraged to go back into the world and Play there!  It all depends on what works for you.

Learning Laws

These are the 5 Learning Laws that The You Space subscribes to and promotes to encourage healthy adventurous learning:

1. YOU are the expert of you

You know yourself better than anyone, and you have a life of wisdom and experience, which means you have the answers within you, you just may need a little help coaxing them out

2. The only person you have control over is YOU

You can't use a "remote control" on others - it won't work.  We all have our own personal remote controls, and they only work by us on us - you have the ability to learn how to use your internal remote control more effectively

3. Follow YOUR path

You have a path to follow, and it's yours - it's never the same as anyone else's, so trust and embrace your own learning path

4. Learning is an adventure

Take on the adventure of stepping out of your comfort zone - enjoy the twists and turns and ups and downs - that's what makes adventures so fun and satisfying

5. Respect is everything

Unconditional positive regard for yourself, others, and the learning process provides the best conditions for the funnest and healthiest of adventures

Personal Stuff

You now know a bit about my work life so here's a little info about my other passions.  You'll notice from my website there are a lot of photos of places and food - my other two passions.   All these pictures on the website are from my eight month round-the-world solo adventure in 2010  - it was a dream come true.  It was also eight months of learning, reflecting, and playing - my learning philosophy in action.
